On May 10th, in an interview with Le Parisien, Prime Minister Jean Castex expressed optimism for the first time in a long while. He stated that France was ‘sustainably emerging’ from the health crisis caused by Covid-19. Indeed, step by step, the country will begin easing restrictions starting from May 19th. Soon, the French will be able to return to restaurants, cinemas, museums, gyms… and rediscover the taste of freedom and life before the crisis. But what about the events industry, trade shows, fairs, and other large-scale events? Well, it seems that the events sector is finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel!

An Encouraging First Step on June 9th

While the initial easing of lockdown measures begins on May 19th, it takes a bit longer for the good news to arrive for the events industry. Indeed, it’s on June 9th that the sky brightens somewhat for all professionals (and the public!) craving events. From this date, trade shows and exhibitions can finally reopen their doors, under two conditions: they can host a maximum of 5,000 people and, most importantly, attendees must have the famous health pass. This pass, which can be either an immunity certificate obtained after vaccination or a negative test taken within the last 72 hours, will be mandatory for accessing events, whether they are trade shows, cultural, or sporting events. This encouraging first measure will be followed by another on June 30th, allowing participation in events with over 1,000 attendees, both indoors and outdoors, still contingent upon having the health pass.

Preparing for the Return

Naturally, these national measures are subject to change over time and may be adjusted in regions where the virus is spreading rapidly. If the incidence rate rises above 400 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, increases sharply, or there’s a risk of intensive care unit saturation, new, stricter measures might be implemented. However, the outlook seems to be clearing for the events industry, allowing the entire sector to breathe a sigh of relief. Professionals are anticipating a gradual recovery, with 35% of activity in September, 50% in October, and a steady increase until the end of the year.
